  • Course begins March 1, 2010.  Creating Inclusive Classrooms will help teachers build a solid foundation of understanding for the nature of special needs difficulties and ways to create and implement effective instructional programs. A central premise throughout the class is that one method of instruction will not work with all children. This class will investigate the impact of different teaching styles and the use of differentiated instruction to meet the needs of learners who are struggling to learn. This investigative course will include strategies and sample lessons that have been tested and proven to work with students that have a multitude of difficulties in learning. A research based approach, followed by a research paper performed by the students, will be used by studying different websites and the text. Teachers will be able to use their research to help students get a better grasp on learning and other academic areas of problems. The text that will be used for the class is Salend S. J. (2007). Creating Inclusive Classrooms: Effective Practices for All Students. (6th Edition). Upper Saddle River, NJ: Merrill Prentice Hall.
  • Registration is now open.  Teaching Mathematics to Stuggling Learners will help teachers build a solid foundation of understanding the nature of mathematical difficulties and ways to create and implement effective instructional programs.  A central premise throughout the class is that one method of instruction will not work with all children.  This class will investigate the impact of different teaching styles and the use of differentiated instruction to meet the needs of learners who are struggling in math.  This investigative course will include strategies and sample lessons that have been tested and proven to work with students that struggle in mathematics.  A research based approach, followed by a research paper performed by the students, will be used by studying different websites and the text.  Teachers will be able to use their research to help students get a better grasp on mathematics as well as other academic areas of problems.  The text that will be used for the class is "Teaching Learners Who Struggle with Mathematics, Second Edition (2009) by Sherman, Richardson, and Yard.

  • This course is primarily designed for all K-12 content area teachers interested in strengthening their knowledge and application of project based learning and technology integration. The Intel®Teach Course, Thinking with Technology, builds on effective technology integration skills. Teachers use free online tools to support the development of their students’ higher level thinking skills. This course looks at how teachers can use the internet in constructive, standards based ways and integrate into their curriculum unique online thinking tools that are designed for students to visually represent their understanding of complex and interconnected ideas. Course prerequisites include educators having a basic knowledge of Internet tools, Word and classroom based technologies. Some experience with lesson design and assessment design is helpful.
  • This course has ended.  Registration is closed.  Students will examine best practices in inclusive education as well as the stages of co-teaching. Practical tips for facilitating student learning will be looked at and discussed.
  • This course has ended.  Registration is closed.  Teaching Reading to Stuggling Learners will help teachers build a solid foundation of understanding the nature of reading difficulties and ways to create and implement effective instructional programs. A central premise throughout the class is that one method of instruction will not work with all children. This class will investigate the impact of different teaching styles and the use of differentiated instruction to meet the needs of learners who are struggling to read. This investigative course will include strategies and sample lessons that have been tested and proven to work with struggling readers. A research based approach, followed by a research paper performed by the students, will be used by studying different websites and the text. Teachers will be able to use their research to help struggling readers not only in Reading class, but also in all other areas of academics. The text that will be used for the class is "Teaching Reading to Struggling Learners (2005) by Dr. Esther Minskoff.

  • This course has ended.  Registration is closed.  This class will investigate the impact of research based classroom instructional conditions and the affect that they have on teachers, parents, and students in the public school system. This investigative class will investigate the importance of creating specific objectives for lessons, graphic organizers, effective note taking, reinforcement, cooperative learning and collaborative pairs, and summary factors which influence education. A research based approach, followed by a research paper performed by the students, will be used by studying the text, and websites dealing with the subject matter. Teachers will be able to use their research to maintain a classroom that will use research based strategies in reaching all students and setting an awareness to research based classroom instructional practices.

  • This course has ended.  Registration is closed.  This class will investigate the impact of school law on the rights of teachers, parents, and students as guaranteed by the Constitution and its amendments. This investigative class will include state and federal statutory and regulatory provisions as well as tort options and contract liability as they influence education. A research based approach, followed by a research paper performed by the students, will be used by studying different court cases, the text, and websites. Teachers will be able to use their research to maintain a classroom that is protected by both the rights of the teacher and the rights of the students through the Constitution and its amendments.
  • This course has ended.  Registration is closed.  This class will investigate the impact of Multiculturalism and Socioeconomical conditions and the affect that they have on teachers, parents, and students in the public school system. This investigative class will include Title 1 restrictions and take a look at how ethnic, religion, and economical factors influence education. A research based approach, followed by a research paper performed by the students, will be used by studying different videos, the text, and websites dealing with the subject matter. Teachers will be able to use their research to maintain a classroom that will protect both the rights of the teacher and the rights of the students through the use of Multicultural and Socioeconomical awareness.   • This on-line course will offer K-12 educators an opportunity to:Recognize the urgency in offering students DI activities (2hr.) Understand the research that supports DI in the classroom (2 hr.) Develop a student inventory to determine different student needs (2 hr.) Determine strategies for incorporation (3 hr.) Research and evaluate available Internet resources (3 hr.) Develop a Learning Plan for two units of study in the classroom (2 hr.) All participants will be invited to post their Learning Plans and thoughts on a WikiSpace that will be developed and updated by anyone interested in DI. All necessary resources will be available on-line. Participants will need access to a computer with Internet capabilities. Participants will have an opportunity to evaluate the course on an on-going basis through e-mail contact with the instructor or by posting on Moodle.
